Innovation, Reliability, and Partnership in Sleep Diagnostics

Founded in 1992 by biomedical engineer Dr Lyn Davies, Stowood Scientific Instruments has spent more than three decades advancing the way sleep is measured, analysed, and understood. From our base in Oxford, UK, we design and manufacture our own Black Series ambulatory monitors, develop Visi-Download software, and distribute carefully selected diagnostic systems from partners in the USA and China.

Our products are trusted by NHS sleep services, private clinics, and research institutions worldwide for their accuracy, usability, and long-term reliability. Whether used in hospital sleep laboratories, home-testing programmes or academic research, Stowood systems help clinicians deliver faster, more confident diagnoses.

Built Around Clinical Needs

Every solution we develop is shaped by feedback from sleep physiologists, consultants, and technicians.
From bespoke system configurations and multi-bed PSG installations to integration with existing hospital IT, we ensure our tools fit real-world workflows. Our UK-based team provides knowledgeable support, training, and software updates — because reliable diagnostics require reliable people behind them.

Our Technology Portfolio

  • Black Shadow multi-channel recorders – award-winning ambulatory monitoring
  • Visi-Download 2 – gold-standard analysis software with many metrics
  • Oximetry & Polygraphy systems from Viatom and Masimo
  • Complete diagnostic pathway: screening → polygraphy → polysomnography

Sustainability & Responsibility

We’re committed to Net Zero operations, with UK-based manufacturing reducing transport emissions, renewable-energy offices, and carbon-neutral shipping. Remote support and training minimise travel, helping our partners meet their own sustainability targets.

Legacy & Leadership

Dr Lyn Davies was both an innovator and an engineer at heart – his love of motorbikes even inspired the names Grey Flash and Black Shadow. Today, under the leadership of his son CEO Dr Gwilym Davies, we continue his legacy of practical innovation and personal service, supporting clinicians with tools that combine precision and simplicity.

Supporting the Future of Sleep Medicine

We proudly sponsor the Lyn Davies Award, run jointly by the British Sleep Society and ARTP, encouraging research and innovation in sleep diagnostics.
